About The Squire
So as I am sure many are wondering, what prompted the creation of an Online Magazine tailored to the SCA. Well its starts like this….
A number of months ago, a friend of mine was visiting a local coffee shop and, as I am sure many of us have done, found herself explaining what the SCA is to the resident barista. Having absorbed the information, the barista was quick to respond with, “Oh like that group in the movie Role Models?” Now for many Scadians (the term we apply to those of us in the society) Role Models practically made us want to run and quit. Despite the knowledge that LARP’s are different from what we do, even I found myself asking, “Holy crap! Is this how we are perceived?”
Now coincidentally at the same time, our Kingdom was wrestling with the matter of having very few newcomers, which is always a concern for any organizational entity. Lets face it, we have always been viewed as a tad elitist and stuffy, sometimes to the point of frightening away potential newcomers. This had to change, so I asked a simple question. How can we increase societal transparency to new interested parties, while being a resource for those who already participate?
Faced with this question, I realized that there was a large disconnect between us and those who have never heard of the group, and this gap needed to be bridged. With that I started The Squire Online. A magazine for Scadians and Mundanes, aimed at providing relevant information to newcomers and members, while looking at the lighter side of what we do. Welcome to The Squire Online!
