I’ll be honest. When I first started in the SCA I never expected to participate in this tournament. I had no desire to be King, and in many ways, I still don’t. My ultimate goal in the society was to be a knight who served the people. Who could pass on his knowledge to future generations. I wanted to be Percival or Gawain, never Arthur.

However in my quest to prove to myself that I am such a man, I realized the true importance of what this tournament really meant. This tournament is not meant as a route to ones own personal glory and power, it is a test of heart. For if one desires to be king, should they not display the virtues of someone ready to lead the people? If the king falls, who will stand and look over those left without a leader? If you were called upon, would you be up to the task?

As I sit here tonight I find myself asking these questions and others. Am I ready for this trial? Perhaps. Am I worthy of the honor of being on this field? I’m not sure. I can only go and become the hero I wanted to be as a child. Someone who could step forward if called upon to look over the people and ensure their safety and well being.

I am truly honored and excited to be allowed to take my place on the field tomorrow amongst many of my heroes for the first time. Unto the Crown of Atenveldt do I extend my thanks for the opportunity.

My next post will be post crown and I hope to share some great moments with you all!

-The Squire
aka Yoshi
